5th Grader Discovers Molecule as Yet Unknown to Science - This 8-Bit Life

Leland Flynn

Apparently while working on an assignment in her chemistry class (sidenote: Kids take chemistry in 5th grade now!) Clara Lazen managed to discover a completely new molecule! The new molecule, tetranitratoxycarbon, does not exist in nature and will have to be synthesized in a lab to be studied. Once it is synthesized and studied we should have some clear information on the benefit, if any, of this molecule.

I really think that this story needs all the press it can get. It can help show children that learning in itself is an important part of the scientific process. Even just fiddling around with a molecular modeling kit in your 5th grade chemistry class is important to science. We should point out to children that they are always a part of something grand and important when they are learning.

I could not be more proud of this little girl and I don’t even know her. I definitely think she has a bright future.
