A deaf woman hears for the first time in her life thanks to a Cochlear Implant - This 8-Bit Life

Leland Flynn

This is a video of a 29 year old woman having her Cochlear Implant turned on for the first time. Every time I see a video like this I tear up a bit. We may make a lot of horrile mistakes as a species, but things like this represent the true and lasting good that we are capable of. This is just beautiful.

Very moving, but it must not be the first time she's heard or she wouldn't understand spoken language without lipreading (she responds to the nurse when her eyes are covered.) more likely she lost her hearing at some point through illness or an accident. Man I'm such a buzzkill.

She may very well have. But there have been many idiots on the internet stating that this must be entirely fake. Unfortunately it would seem many people do not understand how speech works.

Certainly she’d heard earlier in her life and had become deaf, but that’s also part of the beauty of it. This was a girl who knew what she was missing, and got it back.

Think about that for a bit. If someone came around and attached an extra set of robot arms to you, so that you had four arms total, well that might be interesting, but I’m not sure you’d break down crying in joy. But if you’d lost both your arms in an accident first, spent years living without arms, and then a nice doctor came around with some bionic arms for you… it would be one of the best moments of your life.
