DIY Solar Heater - This 8-Bit Life

Leland Flynn

I lurk and occasionally post on a forum called Zombie Squad and recently came across a nifty post by a member named Regulator. He built a custom, inexpensive solar heater for his apartment from some soda cans, gutter downpiping, a cheap thermostat, a PC case fan, and a solar panel. Hey drilled holes into a bunch of soda cans and stuffed them inside the downpiping, then mounted the piping in rows in a wooden frame, painted everything black with high heat Krylon meant for grills and the like. He then mounted the thermostat, battery, and solar panel. The panel supplies 22VDC to the battery which powers the fan. Once the inside reaches about 90 degrees, the thermostat closes the circuit and the fan blows out nice, hot air to ducting that is easily placed in any dwelling. This is a super nifty build, I hope to make a few some day.

Here’s the link.

  1. Regulator built a nice solar heater. With 3 or 4 of these he could easily heat a garage.
