John McCarthy: The Father of Artificial Intelligence - This 8-Bit Life

Leland Flynn

I know that I am late to this party, but it is never too late to pay tribute to great men. John McCarthy was certainly great. It is validly arguable that he was the father of modern artificial intelligence, and it is a fact that he was a pioneer in the field of computer science and that coined the term ‘artificial intelligence’.

McCarthy taught himself higher math at a very young age. He attended Princeton University where he received his Ph.D. in 1951. He later moved on to create the programming language LISP with the expressed intent of creating turing machines. The language is still used to this day. He received the Turing award in 1971.

This man helped make what most of us do in our daily lives possible, from the relative mundanity of a Goggle search to the awe-inspiring power of modern AIs. He was a great man whose legacy will affect our lives for the rest of our natural existence. He will be missed.
