The Raspberry Pi Release is Upon Us! - This 8-Bit Life

Leland Flynn

The release of the Raspberry Pi computer is almost here! The first production batch of boards will sport a 700MHz Broadcom SoC chip, 256 MB of RAM, an SD Card Slot, an HDMI port, 2 USB ports and an Ethernet port. For such a low cost that’s a lot of power. The device has already been shown to decode 1080p h.264 encoded video without even batting an eye. For most applications this $25 teensy computer looks like it will be more than up to the task. To really sweeten the pot here there is also a version of Fedora Linux being built to run natively on the device. You can see a demo of it in the video below.

If you’re at all interested in technology I think it’s pretty much a no-brainer to pick one up. You need one of these. For your $25 you’re getting a competent computer in a very small package and the possibilities that it holds for makers, robotics hobbyists and Linux nerds are innumerable. I’ll be keeping my eye on the Raspberry Pi site as well as this handy countdown clock to make sure that I can pick up at least one of these before the first batch is gone.

Happy hunting folks!
